Mark Cuban’s new ‘chips are the new crypto’ call revives a seven-year record of misses

Mark Cuban set off a fresh round of debate after posting that chips as an asset class will become the new cryptocurrency. The remark drew more than 1.2 million views in a day, but the reaction quickly shifted to his long list of previous crypto calls, from Bitcoin and Dogecoin to Iron Finance, Voyager Digital and a phishing loss tied to MetaMask. In 2019, Cuban said he would rather hold bananas than Bitcoin. In 2021, he compared crypto trading to the late-1990s internet bubble, then later called Bitcoin a store of value. He also promoted Iron Finance liquidity mining, backed Voyager as the Dallas Mavericks’ first crypto sponsor, and repeatedly pushed Dogecoin payments. More recently, he said he had sold 98% of a Bitcoin position once worth hundreds of millions of dollars and kept only a small amount of Dogecoin. The latest comment leaves one question hanging: whether this new call will age any better than the last seven years of predictions.

Mark Cuban’s chip-as-crypto call revives scrutiny of his past crypto bets

Mark Cuban’s latest crypto-related claim — that chips will become a new form of cryptocurrency — quickly reignited debate over his long record of calls in digital assets. According to a Protos report cited by MarsBit, the billionaire entrepreneur has spent years making forceful statements on crypto, only to see many of them age poorly or become tied to high-profile setbacks. The report revisits Cuban’s 2019 remarks dismissing Bitcoin, including his widely quoted line that he would rather own bananas because they can at least be eaten. It also points to a deleted 2021 post comparing crypto trading to the late-1990s internet bubble, followed months later by his description of Bitcoin as the best store of value. Protos also tracks Cuban’s involvement in the Iron Finance collapse, his promotion of Voyager Digital before the lender went bankrupt, his repeated support for Dogecoin, and a 2023 phishing incident that reportedly cost him about $870,000. More recently, Cuban said he had sold 98% of what had once been a Bitcoin position worth hundreds of millions of dollars, keeping only a small amount of DOGE. The article frames his latest statement on chips against that broader history of reversals, losses and controversy.
